What is JEE Main?

The Joint Entrance Examination Main (JEE Main) is a highly competitive engineering entrance exam in India. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and serves as the primary gateway for admission into various undergraduate engineering programs at prestigious institutions, including the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and other government-funded technical institutes. JEE Main is also an eligibility test for JEE Advanced, which is conducted for admission to IITs. JEE Main is a two-paper exam:
  1. Paper 1: This paper is conducted for admission to undergraduate engineering programs like B.E./B.Tech. It includes subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
  2. Paper 2: This paper is conducted for admission to B.Arch and B.Planning courses. It includes subjects like Mathematics, Aptitude Test, and Drawing Test.

Mode of Examination

JEE (Main) is being conducted in the following modes:
  • Paper 1 (B.E. /B. Tech.) in “Computer Based Test (CBT)” mode ONLY.
  • Paper 2A (B. Arch): Mathematics (Part-I) and Aptitude Test (Part-II) in “Computer Based Test (CBT)” mode only and Drawing Test (Part-III) in pen and paper (offline) mode, to be attempted on a drawing sheet of A4 size.
  • Paper 2B (B. Planning): Mathematics (Part-I), Aptitude Test (Part-II), and Planning-Based Questions (Part-III) in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode only.

Language of the test

JEE (Main) is being conducted in English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.
The option of language for Question Paper should be exercised carefully while filling up the Application Form online as it cannot be changed at a later stage.

Frequency of JEE Main

JEE Main is held twice in a year, namely in January and April providing candidates with the flexibility to choose to either attempt it once (any of the two sessions) or attempt it twice wherein the best score between the two will be considered. The scores obtained in JEE Main are also used for admission to various state-level engineering colleges and private institutions.
Successful candidates who wish to pursue specialised engineering programs in IITs can further appear for the JEE Advanced, which is the entrance examination for admission to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

Frequently Asked Questions

Review all 10 questions first, select the 5 most comfortable ones. Since there's no negative marking, attempt these questions with full concentration.

Yes, attempt all Section A questions as they are compulsory. However, if completely unsure, skip to avoid negative marking.

Percentile is calculated based on the relative performance of all candidates who appeared in that session. Your score is normalized across different sessions.

The qualifying score varies yearly. Generally, scoring above 85-90 percentile gives a good chance for NITs/IIITs, while 75+ percentile is required for JEE Advanced eligibility.

Allocate 2 hours for Section A (40 minutes per subject) and 1 hour for Section B (20 minutes per subject). Keep 10-15 minutes for revision.

Start with your strongest subject to build confidence. However, ensure you allocate adequate time for all three subjects.

Very important. Due to negative marking in Section A, accuracy directly impacts your final score. Aim for at least 90% accuracy in attempted questions.

Yes, you can review and change answers within the allotted time. Use the mark for review feature for doubtful questions.

Practice type-in answers extensively. Focus on quick calculation methods and unit conversions as there are no options to help.

The exam pattern remains the same. The difficulty level might vary slightly, but scores are normalized across sessions.

Aim to correctly solve 45-50 questions out of 75 for a competitive score. Quality of attempts matters more than quantity.

No, you can manage your time across sections and subjects as per your convenience within the 3-hour duration.

Practice with similar calculators beforehand. Remember, it's basic and meant only for complex calculations.

Read questions carefully, use rough work effectively, and double-check units and conversions before entering answers.
