Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay continues to be students’ first choice after they have performed well in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced held in the country. In the same year 2024, several high-ranking candidates especially from the top 50 preferred IIT Bombay, because of its good reputation and energetic student life. This trend goes on which in turn consolidates the position of the institute as the premier engineering education hub for India.
According to the list of the top 100 along with the JEE Advanced results, 72 students have reported joining IIT Bombay, and 47 out of the top 50 have also selected the Institute. These statistics support the fact that this institution remains the most preferred destination for India’s best brains in an engineering discipline. The IIT Bombay is one of the well-equipped technological campuses, with advancing research facilities, and excellent industry networking for the students who want to establish themselves in the technology domain.
Many institutes also commented on the list including the director of the IIT Bombay Shireesh Kedare who was happy that his institute retained its attraction for many top rankers. He said this by saying: “We are glad to accept the best brains in our institution and are optimistic that they will excel in the academic arena.”
The trend of computer science engineering being the most sought-after course remains unchanged. According to recent data, 99 out of the top 100 candidates opted for computer science at IITs, continuing a pattern seen over the last several years. This choice reflects the growing demand for computer science graduates in the job market, with lucrative opportunities in tech giants and startups alike. Many candidates believe that a degree in computer science opens doors to some of the highest-paying and most innovative careers in the tech industry.
Despite efforts to encourage interest in core engineering disciplines, such as electrical and mechanical engineering, computer science continues to dominate. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has launched initiatives to promote core engineering courses, but the demand for computer science remains high due to its strong employment prospects and the rise of new technologies like AI and data science.
While IIT Bombay holds the top spot, IIT Delhi and IIT Madras also remain strong contenders for JEE Advanced toppers. IIT Delhi attracted 23 of the top 100 candidates, while IIT Madras was the third most popular choice. Both institutions have their own strengths, with IIT Delhi excelling in research and entrepreneurship, and IIT Madras being known for its innovation in engineering and technology.
One area that remains a challenge for IITs is female enrolment. Despite the introduction of supernumerary seats for female candidates, the overall percentage of female students in IITs continues to stay below 20%. IIT Bombay has made strides in this area, reaching a 20.3% enrolment rate for female students in 2024. However, much work remains to ensure gender parity in these prestigious institutions.
IITs are actively working to encourage more female participation in engineering. Programs such as mentorship for female students from government schools and reserved sports quota seats are part of these efforts. Institutes like IIT Delhi and IIT Madras are also taking steps to improve gender diversity on their campuses, reflecting a growing awareness of the importance of inclusivity in education.
IIT Bombay remains the preferred choice of JEE Advanced toppers, particularly for those dreaming of a Computer Science engineering degree. It has a reputation for academic excellence: this is primarily because of the quality of the faculty, student quality, and linkage with the business world that make it the program of choice for the cream of students in India. However, the demand for computer science persists, and actions are being taken to diversify engineering streams and improve female enrollment in IITs. To sum up, the IITs are still in progress and are still the leading institute of technological education in India.
