Your child's school offers IB. Their friend's child is doing AP. Someone else mentioned SAT Subject Tests. Three programmes, three acronyms, and very different implications — yet most parents sitting across from an admissions counsellor in India have only a vague idea of how they actually differ. If you're trying to make a decision for your child's 2025–26 academic year, this guide cuts through the confusion.
AP vs IB India is one of the most-searched questions among parents of students at IGCSE and international schools. This guide will answer it clearly — and also address a question that still surfaces constantly: SAT Subject Tests are no longer available. We will explain what that means and what to focus on instead.
Advanced Placement exams are university-level standardised tests developed by the College Board — the same US organisation that administers the SAT. Each AP exam covers a single subject in depth: AP Calculus BC, AP Chemistry, AP Physics, AP English Literature, and so on. Students take individual exams in May and receive a score from 1 to 5. A score of 4 or 5 typically earns college credit at most US universities, meaning your child can skip introductory courses when they arrive on campus.
AP exams are available to any student — you do not need to attend a school that offers AP courses. Indian students can register as outside candidates at authorised test centres in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, and other cities. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme is a comprehensive two-year curriculum offered at select international schools worldwide. It is not a single exam — it is a full academic programme that runs through Grades 11 and 12. Students study six subjects spanning sciences, humanities, mathematics, and language, while also completing an Extended Essay, a Theory of Knowledge component, and a Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) requirement.
The IB Diploma is a holistic qualification. It is widely respected by US, UK, Canadian, and European universities. In India, IB schools are concentrated in major metros — approximately 200 IB-authorised schools exist across the country, most of them premium private institutions.
This is the single most important clarification in this guide: the College Board permanently discontinued SAT Subject Tests in January 2021. They are no longer offered anywhere in the world, including India.
SAT Subject Tests — also known as SAT IIs — were one-hour standardised tests in individual subjects such as Mathematics Level 2, Chemistry, Physics, and Biology. Thousands of Indian families still search for information about them online because outdated content continues to circulate. If your child's school counsellor, coaching centre, or relative is recommending SAT Subject Tests as a current option for the 2025–26 cycle, that advice is incorrect. The product no longer exists.
What replaced SAT Subject Tests for demonstrating subject-level academic ability? AP exams. Many US universities that previously required or recommended SAT Subject Tests now point students towards AP scores instead.
For the vast majority of Indian families in 2025, the practical choice is between AP and IB. SAT Subject Tests are no longer part of the conversation.
Here is how to think about the choice:
If your child attends a school offering the IB Diploma, they are already on the IB track. The IB Diploma is a full curriculum — adding AP exams on top is not necessary and is rarely recommended. Focus on excelling in IB instead. IB Higher Level (HL) subjects carry similar weight to AP exams in US admissions.
This is the strongest use case for AP exams. Students at CBSE, ICSE, or Cambridge IGCSE schools can take AP exams as outside candidates — without changing schools or disrupting their existing curriculum. AP exams let them demonstrate university-level mastery in specific subjects relevant to their intended major, strengthening a US application significantly.
For STEM-focused students, the two most impactful subjects to consider first are AP Calculus BC and AP Chemistry.
Your child is choosing between schools — one offers IB, another doesn't
Here the IB vs AP question matters most. Consider these factors:
The cost headline is clear: AP exams are significantly more cost-efficient for families whose child is not already enrolled in an IB school. If your child is already in an IB school, the comparison is moot — you are paying for IB as part of the school fees regardless.
A common misconception is that IB is more respected than AP at US universities, or vice versa. Admissions officers at US universities — including Ivy League and other highly selective institutions — view both programmes as credible signals of academic rigour. Neither is categorically favoured.
What matters is performance within the programme, not the programme itself:

The right answer almost always comes down to where your child is currently enrolled and where they are planning to apply. There is no universal winner between AP and IB for Indian students — only the right fit for a specific student's school, budget, strengths, and university goals.
Is IB better than AP for US university admissions?
Neither is categorically better. Top US universities accept both equally. The real question is which fits your child's school situation and learning style. IB requires committing to a full two-year diploma programme. AP allows you to pick specific subjects without disrupting your existing school curriculum.
Can Indian students take AP exams without attending an AP school?
Yes. Indian students can register as outside candidates at authorised AP test centres. You do not need to attend a school that offers AP courses — this is a key point many families miss.
Are SAT Subject Tests still available in 2025?

How many AP exams should a student take?

AP and IB are both credible, globally recognised pathways to US university admissions. IB is a holistic two-year commitment suited to students already enrolled in IB schools. AP is a flexible, subject-specific option that CBSE, ICSE, and IGCSE students can pursue without changing schools. For most Indian families not already on the IB track, AP exams are the more accessible and cost-efficient route to demonstrating university-level academic ability.
The students who maximise their results from either programme are those who choose subjects aligned to their intended major, prepare systematically over 6–12 months, and treat the exams with the rigour they deserve.
