The National Society of Engineers is the body responsible for setting the code of conduct that engineers are supposed to follow. The code contains six guiding principles set by this body. In reviewing the code of professional ethics and duties of the engineers, its benefits, drawbacks, and unexpected consequences were intended to be found. The strengths of the code are, in fact, many directives that it provides, the importance of services provided by the engineers, and, therefore, how the engineers should conduct themselves by their important services. The code stipulates that an engineer's work is essential for the well-being of society and is not like other ordinary jobs. All engineering organizations should practice ethical engineering because failure should never be an option.
Engineering fields like aeronautical, electrical, mechanical, chemical etc. may have their discipline-specific set of ethical guidelines. It is not bad to have a general set of moral principles as disciplines can contextualize them to make them applicable to their functional requirements, although the absence of domain-specific ethical principles is a lack of them. One major oversight in this paper is the lack of ethical principles for an international setting. This does not imply that all the engineers will treat the external contractors like their internal peers. The code, therefore, should represent a general set of rules concerning how to carry out an operation the world over.
• The guiding principle in the performance of professional obligations of an engineer shall be a concern for the public safety, health, and welfare.
• The engineer shall undertake only those tasks or services he is competent and qualified to perform; shall establish his professional reputation on the basis of merit; and shall not compete in matters of professional endeavor unfairly with other engineers.
• Engineers shall seek ongoing professional development throughout their careers and shall provide opportunities for engineers in their charge to similarly develop their professional and technical expertise.
• Engineers should avoid or disclose possible conflicts of interest or the appearance of conflicts of interest and manage the business and professional dealings with fairness and equity to each client or customer as loyal agents or trustees.
• Engineers protect the intellectual property rights of other parties and confidential business or technical information, including information related to charities and engineering societies.
• Engineers shall not do those acts that demean the reputation of the profession and shall only make public statements that are impartial and honest
• While performing their professional duties, engineers shall consider the impact of the environment and sustainable development.
